Creating the results section

The results section of a research paper is one of the most important parts to get correct. This section comes after the discussion section, and explores the results of the experiments and/or research that you performed as described in your methodology section. Basically, this is the section where you share the results of your research and explore how they are related to the thesis. Here are some tips that can help you with writing the results part.

  1. When you report your data, make sure that you report it in such a way to justify the conclusions that you are making from the data. You will talk more about this in the discussion section, but you have to report it in a way that it can be used to justify claims.
  2. Mention everything that matters to your discussion later on, even if those results do not coincide with your original thesis. Don’t ignore negative results. Just because what you did doesn’t support your initial thesis doesn’t mean that it’s not important to the study in general. Make sure to include any surprising information as well.
  3. There is no need for you to report all of the raw data. You can do this in an appendix. The results section is only to summarize, not to spit it all out. In some cases, you can (and should) put a couple of graphs, but don’t do all of them that you have. Make sure that the graphs and charts that you put in are ones that you are talking about in your results section; don’t put one in for the sake of putting one in. Don’t repeat information in two different ways, either.
  4. Even though you are presenting new information to readers, your readers will have a basic understanding of statistics. Report the results; don’t spend a lot of time trying to explain each test or piece of data.
  5. The results section should be entirely objective; you do not need to be putting your opinion in here. Just the facts; you get to share your interpretations in the discussion section. The more facts, the better, just be as concise as possible.

If you focus on giving the correct information in your results section, you can expound on it more when you get to your discussion section. The more information that you share in the results section, the easier it will be for people to understand how you came to your conclusions and interpretations.
