Calc 3 in the High School Curriculum
Recently, the School Board decided to make Calc 3 available to high school students. However, there are many issues as far as having qualified teachers, not enough interest, and the grading system.
A possible solution is to have one school's Calc 3 class video taped, and then have that class broadcasted to other schools. But what are the academic repercussions of such a teaching method? Another solution includes having teachers that move from school to school throughout the day. But should schools with only one student able to take the class require a single teacher to drive across the county?
Also, how should this class be graded? Since it's not a certified "Advanced Placement" class, should it still be given a 5.0 weight?

Well having the class taped would not be sucha great Idea. Although this is a method used commonly in homeschooling the student would not be able to ask questions or get clearification. ONe solution is virtual high school so the students and teachers could interact. AP is property of the college board so it wouldn't be given a 5.0. In order to have a resource teacher drive acroos the county would call for more thatn one student.

I am a freshman now...do you think that there will be a solution by the time I am a senior (the time that i will be qualified for the class)? I think that in three years that there will be enough interest in order to have a class, don't you think?
I am really glad that the county decided to offer this course...in college it will make things alot easier.
Calc 3 in the High School Curriculum
In three years there will be many more chhildren able to take the progams the way it is setup now, so It hink there will be a solution.
Calc 3 in the High School Curriculum
yeah...like i'm sure that there are not many kids who would be able to take it next year, but because the middle schools are offering high school classes, it gives kids a chance to get ahead so that they can take those classes like Calc 3.

Why was this thread recreated? I remember discussing this issue to great detail, yet, I don't see any of it here.

Hopefully there will be a solution to this.
There are many bright minds in our high school today who would really benefit from having a college-level course at their school. I have heard there are several 9th graders in Algebra II but I'm not sure. They are the ones who are really eligible for Calc III.
