Outstanding conclusion for a research paper

If you’re like me, you probably struggle with finishing a paper. I can knock out an introduction with the best of them, and I can write my ideas out forever, but the conclusion is incredibly difficult for me to do. It’s not for lack of trying; it’s just hard to wrap up a research paper when you feel like you’ve said everything that needs to be said. That’s okay though; honestly, most conclusions are just rewordings of what you’ve already explored in the paper, and any final thoughts that you may have.

If you are looking to write an outstanding conclusion, here are a few ways for you to try and get your thoughts in order.

  • So what? This sounds like a silly way to finish a paper, but it’s really a helpful method of doing this. When you write a sentence in your conclusion; ask yourself why anyone would care about what you’re saying. It will help you build onto your thoughts when you are writing your conclusion.
  • Return to the themes that you explored in the introduction and reword them, with a brief overview of the proof that you brought forward in your literature review and your results. This will help to bring your reader full circle. You can also refer to the introductory paragraph by using words and phrases similar to those that you used in the introduction.
  • Don’t summarize, even though you’ll be tempted to. You can do a brief summary of the points, but don’t leave it at that. Make sure that you expound on the summaries and pull together your thoughts; it will make it much easier for you to do in the long run.
  • When you are writing a conclusion, challenge your readers to do something about the topics you discussed, or bring forward questions and/or ideas that they can study later on. This can help your readers to apply your ideas to their own thought process.
  • Point to implications, similar to what you’ve explored in your results section. You aren’t really supposed to bring in new ideas, but you can point out certain implications that are related to future study and information.

In general, an outstanding conclusion will use all of these different factors and develop them into an intelligent, logical argument that brings your entire paper and your thought process together. Even though writing a conclusion can be hard, it can help your readers better understand where you are coming from.
