Genetically Modified Organisms

Advancement in technology has changed the way of living. Climatic change has driven scientist to research more on alternatives in order to meet the needs of increasing human population and therefore adoption of genetically modified organism (GMO).According to  Karp (2008) Genetically modified organism is obtained by changing organism’s genetic trait by genetic engineering procedure to get a transgenic organism. GMO cover a broad range of micro-organisms, plants and animals. The GMO market has grown tremendously since it became commercially in 1990’s and they were available in the most supermarkets in the US.

Many scientists have argued that GMOs are just the same as natural propagation while those against GMO arguing that it is a total different idea and posses a great risk to the users. Human healthy wellbeing and environmental safety has been the centre of this controversy. Agriculture has grown tremendously has many supporters of GMO argues that the crop production has improved, growth of more nutritious food, development of improved and alternative pharmaceutical products, improved health of  plants and animal and enhancing the resistance of crops to harsh climate and pest etc. According to Karp (2008) environmental pollution has been reduced by using of GM seeds because there is no use of pesticide or insecticide.

Introduction of genes to the plants or animal changes their DNA structure and therefore alters their normal functions. Though GMO has its advantages it has also offered threats to the human being and animal. According to Antoniou et al (2012) the threats of GMOs is more and worse than its benefits. The scholars have argued that these GMOs are made in the laboratory and have a lot of risk and they are toxic and not nutritious as argued. There is no enough evidence of increasing the yield of crops and reduction of pest instead it creates resistance to the pests and weeds, reduces the quality of soil and therefore increasing environmental pollution.

GMO has offered solutions to the current challenges of the food shortage facing the world and also creating debate over its myths and truths. scientific research has greatly grown with new discoveries to solve problems which are arising every day. The issue of whether to adopt GMOs has remained debatable and therefore the production of GMOs should be firmly controlled to reduce its negative impacts to human health or environment.
